There are some days I get out of bed and think, “I just can’t today…” I’ve maybe slept poorly, am stressed to the max, or feel this way for no reason at all.
But, there’s a moment when that happens that is so important. It’s when I make the decision to put one foot in front of the other and get through the day, no matter what. Kathleen Trotter explains how she talks to herself on days like these (like she was in my head), “Your future you will be happier and healthier if you just move.”
It’s true. When I move my body I am more focused, more productive, and generally more pleasant to be around.
What I love about Kathleen’s approach is that she understands each individual is unique. So, while daily motion has to be thought of as a non-negotiable, how you move your body should be personalized to your likes and dislikes — or what Kathleen refers to as pros and cons.
For example, if you really hate running, you’re not going to be consistent with that form of exercise. It works the same with diet. Just because your neighbor lost 50 pounds following the Keto diet doesn’t mean that’s going to work for you.
Of course, your personalized “mix” of diet, exercise, and overall mindset is going to evolve and change as you do. At age 70, you might prefer yoga over spin class.
To get started on figuring out what works the best for you, Kathleen says it’s important to ask yourself some questions, such as “When in my life was I the happiest? The saddest?” or “What is the biggest bad habit that’s bringing negativity to my health and wellness?”
She also explains that curiosity is really important. Don’t shut one approach down until you explore the pros and cons — again, for you personally.
Ultimately, every choice you make today is preparing you for your fittest future self.
